Here is what you need to know so far.
First of all, as we were unable to get 4 consecutive spots as Capital Hills, we are playing at Orchard Creek. The rates at ORCHARD CREEK are simple. Same price for everyone. No discounts (unless you count the 3.6% discount for cash) Credit and Debit card prices are $81.86pp (Cash is ~ $78.91pp) This INCLUDES the cart fee.
The teams are being put together in an effort to keep the skill-levels as even as possible. Given that we have some forced pairings, fathers and sons and such, it has been no simple task. That said, since all scoring, the team portion as well as the MoneyBall drawing, is handicap-based, it should not make that much of a difference.
Herewith are the teams (individual handicaps in parens):

As far as the competition goes, we are going with a modified MagicBall/Stableford scoring system, and, as we did last year and back in 2008 (click here to review), we will be calculating and applying handicaps AFTER the round using the Peoria Method with a slight modification (see bulleted section below).
With regard to the Peoria Method, I will not even know which holes are going to be used for the handicap calculation until AFTER the round. My wife recorded the hole numbers, that were blindly drawn, and sealed the selection. No matter how much I pleaded with her, she wouldn’t tell me…
This will be a 4-player team contest. Each player will be responsible for a score on 4 holes, depending upon which player position they are assigned, defined as:
Player A - will be responsible for scores on the holes with a handicap rating of 1-4
Player B - will be responsible for scores on the holes with a handicap rating of 5-8
Player C - will be responsible for scores on the holes with a handicap rating of 11-14
Player D - will be responsible for scores on the holes with a handicap rating of 15-18
Holes with a handicap rating of 9 and 10 will use the best score from all players in the group. These are “open” holes.
Click here to see the scorecard showing which holes are assigned to which player
Before the start of the round, each team will decide what Player position each golfer will be assigned to. Typically, these positions are assigned by skill level, with the best player of the group taking on the 4 hardest holes (Player A), then the next best player taking on the next hardest holes (Player B) and so on. However, each team will make their own determination based on whatever criteria they chose.
Color-coded scorecards will be provided that indicate which holes players are responsible for. All that is needed is to record the GROSS hole score here.
After the round, the scores will be entered into a spreadsheet that will perform the following tasks automatically:
· This year’s handicaps will be determined slightly differently from last year’s. Since most everyone has a league handicap at Eagle Crest, I will calculate a baseline handicap for them, by converting the league handicap to a Capital Hills handicap using the difference in slopes (difficulty) between the two courses, also taking into account tee-box selections. (NOTE: With the venue change, I am just going to use the same handicaps I came up with for Capital Hills. Should be close enough) For those players who do NOT have a handicap of any sort, I will use their Peoria-calculated handicaps from last year to calculate a baseline handicap for them. For players with an estimated handicap, I will use that estimate as their baseline, and then average it with their Peoria handicap at the end of the round (as noted next). Now, in addition to these baseline handicaps, I will still calculate a Peoria-Handicap for every player after the round. The final handicap that will be used for each player will be the AVERAGE of these two handicap numbers. Fortunately, the spreadsheet does all of the work. I just need to keep the IPAs to a minimum before entering everyone’s scores.
· Calculate their hole-by-hole NET scores
· Convert those NET scores into Stableford points using the following:
NET Score |
Points |
Bogey or worse |
0 |
Par |
1 |
Birdie |
2 |
Eagle |
3 |
Double Eagle |
4 |
Not likely score of 4 under |
5 |
Even less likely score of 5 under |
6 |
I will then manually write the Stableford points of each player onto a paper scoresheet that is a duplicate of the scorecard used during the round. To make this process as accurate as possible, I will have someone read the scores to me from the spreadsheet.
The winning team will be determined by summing the MagicBall/Stableford scores. Ties will be determined by the most, highest individual points (equivalent to most eagles, birdies, etc…). If still tied, the total of scores for the last 4 holes, which include scores from each player, plus, the scores from the 2 “open” holes. If STILL tied, then teams split the total prize money.

CTP will be awarded for the closest of ANY shot that is on the green. There is NO minimum distance requirement. For any CTP where no one hits the green at all, the prize money for that hole will be added to the MoneyBall drawing for whichever side (front/back) the hole is on. This guarantees that all prize money will be awarded.
To make things easier, I would ask that at one person in each group bring a 25’ (minimum) measuring tape, and simply record the group’s best distance (if any) and keep the tape, and paper with name and distance, with you throughout the round.
While I think it is extremely unlikely, the most any single player could walk away with is: $95
$15 ¼ of 1st place team win
$60 for hitting all 4 CTPs (highly unlikely)
$20 for winning both MoneyBall drawings.
What is more likely to happen is 1 or more of the CTPs will roll over into a MoneyBall drawing, potentially resulting in 1 player winning $25-$40 in one of the MoneyBall drawings. That is incentive for everyone to try harder on the CTP holes 😊
That is all for now.
Thanks.
