Hacker Cup

Congratulations MARK!

For the second time in the history of the Hacker Cup we have a player finishing in 1st place here, as well as 1st place (albeit tied) in the league standings. Great way to cap off a great season Mark!

What a great finish! For the first time in recorded history, coming into the final week, we had the 1st and 2nd place players (Mark and Andy), and the 3rd and 4th place players (Tom and Dan Fusco) facing off against each other for all the marbles! With a marginal win by Andy, and a tie by Tom and Dan, the result is also a first time ever 3-way tie for first place!

The first match was a nailbiter, with 6 tied holes.  Starting out with 3 tied holes. Mark took first blood at the par-5 railroad hole with a birdie, while Andy threw up an ugly triple  resulting in a 4-shot swing and a 1-up lead for Mark. Another tie, and then wins on both stroke holes put the 1-up lead in Andy’s hands. There it remained as they went on to tie the last 2 holes for the 5-4 decision. It was a well fought match to be sure!

Match #2 was a different tale, with Tommy getting off to an early 1-up lead as Dan struggled a bit on the first hole. He quickly recovered to get the match back to all square at the 2nd. A win and a tie got Tom back to 1-up through 4. Par for Dan on the 14th had it back to all square once again. A pair of bogeys on the difficult 15th put Tom back on top, where he remained with ties on the next two holes. A 3-shot swing in Dan’s favor at the final hole knotted the match, with the all-important bonus point going to Tom! Nice match guys!

Next up, it was Jim, with the wire-to-wire win over Brian. Up against Jim’s commanding 4-up lead through 5, guaranteeing him at least a tie, Brian hunkered down and won 3 of the last 4 holes to narrow the gap, dropping the match 5½ - 3½  while splitting the bonus point. Way to finish strong Brian!

Making her Hacker League match-play debut, Jill held her own against Lisa. In the only match of the night with no tied holes, both players won either 3 of the four starting or finishing holes, with the deciding hole coming right in the middle at the par 3 14th hole. With no stroke given or received on the hole, Lisa took it by 1 for the 5-4 win. Nice match ladies! Jill, welcome to league play with the Hackers!

Marty pulled double duty in the next group, ending with a split decision. First up came a wire-to-wire win over a struggling Pete, posting his second-highest round of the season, leading to the 7-2 win for Marty.

Struggling a bit himself, Marty and fellow lefty Dave had a closer match, with Marty leading for 5 of the first 6 holes. Dave closed out the come-from-behind win, taking 2½ of the final 3 points for the 5-4 win plus the bonus. The Exec Comp award goes to Scoop!

It wasn’t a good night for Team Michalski, as Sue tied her highest score of the season, falling 6-3 to Dan Richardson, who was filling in for his 12th time this season. Jumping out to the early 3-up lead, Dan was cruising to a big win. To her credit, Sue fought back in the middle of the round, getting to just 1-down through 6, but Dan put on a strong finish to take the 6-3 win. Kudos to both!

Our final match of the season featured our youngest vs eldest players. Bob managed to hold young Dan to all square through the first three holes, slipping to just 1-down over the next two. In the end however, youth prevailed, taking 3 of the final 4 points for the 6-3 win. Well played sirs!

Knockout Contest

Dan Palmerino took the final week’s honor, outlasting everyone to the 17th hole for 7 points. Despite being held to just 1 point for the week, Marty took the season-long honor, averaging 5.182 points per week played.  This earns him a hearty “well done!” along with the gloves to start off the 2025 season.  Congrats Marty!

Eagles and Birdies

As reported above, Mark had the sole birdie on the night, dropping a lengthy uphill putt at the 13th  hole.

Great putt, great birdie!

#13 – Mark

Closest-to-the-pin

Hmmm,  where do I start with this one? I think we all gave Tommy a hard enough time for this last night, so, let’s just leave it at this. Reportedly, there was only 1 group that had a player on the green, and, following a manual measurement, it was determined that Lisa was inside the required distance with a shot that was approximately 21’ from the hole.  Well done Lisa!
