And so, we begin another season of hacking! More so for some of us than others (we know who we are). The weather was perfect, and the course was in good shape!
Once again, just a quick reminder to please let me know if there are future dates that you already know of when you will not be playing. I believe I have the schedule up to date with these, but just in case, be sure to check and see if I have you marked as absent.
All righty then, let’s get to the nitty gritty as it were.
The top point earner for the night, was Ev, doing an excellent job of filling in for Marty by whooping Andy 8 ½ - ½! A 12-foot breaking putt for par on #7 was all that saved Andy from a full-on shut-out. Great round Ev! (Please note that your handicap dropped 3 strokes following this round). Mark, heads up, she may be coming your way next week 😊
Mark shouldn’t be too worried about that though, as he took the 2nd highest point total on the night, with a 7-2 win over Tim. The first half of the round was close, with Mark taking and holding a 1-up lead through the first 4 holes. Firing a 3-over par 39, he closed out the match by winning 4 of the remaining 5 holes. Excellent round Mark!
Next up was Bette with a 6-3 win over Bob. Bette held Bob scoreless for the first 5 holes, guaranteeing the win. Bob needed, and got, a strong finish, winning 3 of the last 4 holes. Nice win Bette, and way to hang in there Bob!
By the way, Bob is starting his 49th season with the GE Hackers Golf league. He has won the league two times, placed 2nd three times, and 3rd once. He currently holds the league record for the lowest net score of 24, achieved just 3 years ago in a 7-2 winning match against fellow veteran Hacker, Dave! An auspicious career indeed! Congratulations Robert! (Let’s see, I was a sophomore in high school the year he started in this league. I’m guessing that at least one of us wasn’t even born yet) 😊
Speaking of Dave, he and Gloria were both 5-4 winners in their matches with Brian and Tom, respectively. Dave and Brian were all-square coming down to the last hole, with Dave edging out Brian by 1 stroke for the win. The match’s closeness was further evidenced by Brian winning the extra point, also by 1 stroke. Great match gents!
Gloria and Tom tied each of the first 4 holes, before Gloria finally drew first blood on the long par five 5th hole. Tommy brought the match to all square on the next hole as Gloria stumbled a bit on the downhill par 3. She recovered on the next hole and then they finished out the match with ties on the remaining 2 holes. Another close one with Gloria taking the extra point by just 1 stroke. Well fought!
The three remaining matches were all 4 ½ - 4 ½ ties.
Starting with Jim and Matt, it was Jim out of the starting gate, with a 2-up lead through the first 4 holes. Matt fought back to take a 1-up lead to the final hole, but a falter there gave Jim the hole and tied the match, including splitting the bonus point. Nice match guys!
The last two ties come from the final foursome featuring the Dans against the Michalskis. Sue took the early lead in her match with Dan Fusco, getting to 3-up through 4 holes. Dan stepped things up, with the help of a couple of birdies, getting the match to all-square after seven holes. And there it remained till the finish. Sue edged him out of the bonus point by just one stroke. Great round Sue!
Meanwhile, it was all Dan Palmerino for the first 6 holes until Pete fought back to take the last 3 holes and erase the 3-down deficit to tie the match at the end and take the bonus point as well. Great finish Pete! Go Team Michalski!
The field of players with no “others” has whittled down quickly, leaving just Mark, Dan, Andy and Marty remaining. Can Mark repeat with an unblemished season? Can Dan, Marty or Andy keep pace with him? We shall see…
The early Hacker Cup lead goes to Mark, with Sue taking 2nd place points. Nice rounds both of you!
