We are 2-for-2 in the weather department! It was another beauty indeed. Here’s an interesting tidbit about our starts here at Eagle Crest comparing last year to this year. I just kind of stumbled on this while taking an amateur statistical look at our 1st weeks’ scores versus our 2nd weeks’ score. So, for both years, from week 1 to week 2 we had 7 players score higher in the 2nd week, 5 players score lower, and 2 players score the same. What’s interesting is that last year we started on the back 9 whereas this year we started on the front. Weather conditions appeared to have been the same, sunny, and nice, although for some reason I failed to mention the weather for the 2nd week last year. Anyway, make of that what you will.
“Thank you” to Ev and Glenn for filling in tonight. As always, we appreciate you helping us out and keeping our matches interesting!
On to the matches…
The top score came out of the matchup of Brian and Bette, with Brian coming out on top 6-3 plus the bonus for a 7-point total. The match started slowly, as they tied the first 3 holes. Brian took control at the 4th hole, going 1-up, then 2-up then 3-up through 6. Bette narrowed the gap to 2-down through 8, but a win at the last hole for Brian gave him the 3-up win.
Father-in-law and son-in-law Dave and Tim shared the next highest scores, both winning their matches 5 ½ - 3 ½ while also taking the bonus point for 6 ½ totals. In the first, it was a straight-up, no-strokes match of Dave vs Glenn, who was filling in for Marty. Dave came out firing to go 3-up through 3. A tie and then 2 wins for Glenn brought the margin to just 1 down through 6. Dave closed out the match taking 2 of the last 3 holes, in a match that had just 1 tied hole. Well fought!
Tim and Tom also had just 1 tied hole in their matchup, but it was Tim getting out to a nearly insurmountable early lead, guaranteeing himself no worse than a tie after 5 holes. Tommy came up with some heroics winning 3 of the last 4 holes to cut Tim’s lead in half at the end. Nice round fellas!
All of the remaining matches ended with scores of 5-4.
In the only one of these matches where the bonus point went to the losing player, it was Matt vs Dan P, each winning one of the 1st two holes to get to all square, where it remained until Matt took and held the lead at the 7th hole, winning it and the next, while Dan took advantage of his length at the end to par and win the last hole. (how’s THAT for a run-on sentence? Might be a record for me 😊 ) Nice close match guys!
Mark had his hands full
with Ev subbing for Jim. Mark took the first hole, but
then Ev fired right back, taking the next 2 to go 1-up through 3. A tie
at the 4th maintained her lead. 2 wins and a tie got Mark
back to 1-up, but
Ev wasn’t done yet, as she won the 8th to knot the match up
going into the last hole. A tidy par by Mark at the last gave him the
1-up win and the bonus point for a 6-point total on the night.
It was a duel in the matchup between Andy and Sue, as Andy got out to an early lead in the match, going 2-up through two. Sue took the next 2 holes to get to all square and tied the 5th to keep the match knotted. Andy went 1-up again, only to be slapped back down at the 7th. With the match still all square going into the final hole, it was all Sue for the win and the bonus point! Nice round Sue!
The match involving the other half of team Michalski, went in a different direction, as it was Pete jumping out to an early lead, getting to 3-up through 4 against Dan F. However, Dan winning the next three holes got the match back to all square, where it remained going into the final hole. Dan took that final hole for the win and the bonus point. Another nice match!
The final match was another back-and-forth affair, with Bob taking the 1st hole against Gloria only to have her take the next two to get to 1-up, where it remained through 4. Bob squared it up at the 5th, but then fell 1-down again at the 6th. A tie at the 7th and a Bob win at the 8th got the match to all square going into the final hole, where Bob prevailed for the win and the extra point! Way to battle it out!
In what can only be called a shocking development, Mark fell out of the “No others” category early this season, suffering a triple at the 2nd hole. This leaves just Dan, Andy and Marty remaining. Andy did try his best to make his exodus with three 3-putts and a very nearly missed 4-putt. It is only a matter of time…
Dave and Mark start out the season undefeated, while Andy and Tom start out winless and tieless.
Following 2 weeks of play, Mark leads here, followed by Brian in 2nd, Dave and Sue tied for 3rd, and Dan Fusco in 5th
Mark held his lead here, while Bob made a big move up from 15th to 2nd.
47 – Mark, Dan & Dan
48 – Andy
49 – Gloria
34 – Bob
37 – Tim, Brian
38 – Gloria
Knock-out Contest
Brian took the weekly honor here, while he and Tom moved up into a tie for the season-long contest. The honor of carrying the gloves passes from Mark to Brian for week #3.
Pete almost got a birdie on the 13th, but it saw the ball just in time and flew away. Otherwise, no birdies on the night.
Bob hit a beauty on the hard to hit 14th, knocking it to a
tidy 6’ 1”. Great shot Robert!
