Another windy one, although not quite as bad as last week. Otherwise, the conditions made for a good night for our favorite pastime involving sticks, small balls and bad language.

Handicap movement was split nearly evenly across the board, with 5 going up, 5 going down and 6 staying the same.

For those of you who pay attention to such things, this is the second time this season where no one had a gross skin during the night (as seen on the weekly “matches-at-a-glance” link). Most seasons we have at least 1 gross skin per night. I suppose this means our group of mid- to lower-handicap players are playing more competitively compared to one another.

There were however 2 net skins, both of which went to Bob, as he scored 2 net eagles at the 16th and 17th holes (that’s a net ACE at 17). Well done, Bob!

Thank you to Dan for filling in for Tommy who is hopefully returning to play this week.

Now for the matches:

Dan Fusco was the top point earner on the night. In his match with Brian, it started out looking like a close one, as they split the first 3 holes. While Dan maintained his consistency throughout the round, shooting his handicap, Brian struggled a bit, allowing Dan to run away with the match, winning 7-2 and taking the bonus point. Nice round Dan!

Mark and Pete also struggled to shoot their handicaps, but Mark was still able to take a 4-up lead to the midway point of the match. From there, Pete managed to win 2 holes and tie 2 holes, resulting in a 6-3 win for Mark. Way to finish strong Pete!

The other, dare I say “better”, half of team Michalski suffered a similar fate at the hands of Dan Richardson.  With a smattering of tied holes and a win at the final hole, Sue managed to garner the same 3 points in the 6-3 loss to Dan, who, by the way, outplayed HIS handicap by 5 strokes.  Nice round Dan!

It was a nailbiter between Tim and Gloria, as Tim started the back-and-forth hole wins that lasted through the first 5 holes. A follow-up win at the 15th and a tie at the 16th guaranteed him the tie.  Gloria took the 17th hole and needed the last hole to tie the match. A bogey to Tim’s par gave Tim the final 5½ - 3½ win, while the bonus point went to Gloria. Both players shot just 1 or 2 strokes over their handicaps for a well fought match!

In a match where both players shot below their handicaps, it was Bette prevailing over Jim after taking 4 ½ of the first 5 holes. Jim came back to life, taking the 15th, halving both of the next 2 holes, and winning the final hole, allowing Bette the 5½ - 3½ win. Nice rounds both players!

Marty and Matt had a close one, with Matt taking the early 2-up lead thru 3 holes.  From there it was a back-and-forth effort as Marty got back to all-square at the 14th, only to have Matt get back to 1-up on the next hole. Getting back to all-square on the next hole, and keeping it there going into the final hole, a par by Matt to Marty’s bogey gave Matt the 5-4 win, while the bonus point went to Marty, shooting 2 below his handicap. Nice match gents!

It was experience vs youth in the matchup between Dave and Dan Palmerino, and it was very close. All square after 2, Dave drew first blood at the 12th hole. Dan then started a set of back-and-forth wins that lasted through the 16th hole. A split at the 17th guaranteed Dave a tie. Dan just needed to win the last hole for the tie, and with a big drive and a 2nd shot that put him in the greenside bunker of the par 5 in just 2 shots, it looked like a foregone conclusion. Alas, this is golf. An unfortunate bladed shot that resulted in an even more unfortunate lie on the wrong side of a tree to the right of the green, led to a hard-earned bogey that was just enough to tie the hole, leaving Scoop with the 5-4 win.  Tough luck Dan!

Finally, we saw what looked like a runaway big win for Andy turn into a slim 5-4 win over Bob. With the tie guaranteed and a 3-up lead for Andy after 6 holes, Bob finished strong to take 2½ of the remaining 3 holes and to finish just 1 down to Andy. Great match Bob! Way to come on strong!

League Standings

All of the movement in the top five spots was limited to the previous week’s top five, as Mark regained the #1 spot, moving up from his 2nd place tie with Dave, who fell to 4th place. Dan Fusco moved into solo 2nd ahead of Marty, who dropped to 3rd place. Rounding out the top 5 is Tim, holding onto that spot from last week.

Hacker Cup

There was no movement in the top 3 of the Hacker Cup standings, as Dan, Tim and Mark maintained their grips on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Meanwhile, Andy moved up from 7th into 4th place nudging Matt and Dave down a bit into 5th and 6th.

The Numbers:

Low Gross

41 – Andy

42 – Marty

44 – Jim, Dan Fusco

Low Net

31 – Dan Richardson

33 – Andy

34 – Bette, Marty

Knock-out Contest

The weekly knock-out went to extra holes with Jim taking the win over Gloria to pick up the 10 points. Despite this, Gloria’s 9 points moved her into the season-long lead, up from 4th to the top spot.

Eagles and Birdies

Another night with no birdies. Can we still blame the wind? Or maybe we just miss the birdie-fest that is Stadium 😊

Closest-to-the-pin

Bette was the sharpshooter tonight, taking her first CTP of the season at 15’ 5” on the difficult 14th hole.  Nice shot Bette!
