Despite the forecast from earlier in the week, it turned out to be a great night weather-wise.
As always, thanks to Dan Richardson for filling in for Matt. Matt, hope your team played well and had fun!
Just 2 handicaps went down this week, with 5 going up and 8 remaining the same. The back 9 continues to prove to be the more difficult of the 2 sides, as 15 players recorded net scores either at or above par, despite the relatively benign conditions. Kudos to Jim for posting the only sub-par net score of the night!
Mark and Andy posted the only gross skins for the night, with Mark taking 1 at the 11th, and 2 each at the 13th and 18th. Andy’s came as 1 at the 1st hole, followed by 3 at the 16th.
In the net skins, Bob took first-blood with 2 skins at the 2nd hole, followed by Dave with a skin at the next hole. Dan Palmerino took 3 on the 15th, with the last 2 skins going to Tommy at the 17th hole.
Now for the matches:
Top points tonight went to Jim and Andy, recording 7-2 wins over Tim and Dave, respectively. Jim ran up his lead quickly, getting to 4-up through 5, assuring himself of no worse than a tie. But a tie was not in the cards, as he guaranteed the win going 5-up at the next hole. Tim fought back valiantly splitting the last 3 points to keep the loss at 5-down.
It took a little longer for Andy to get to the assured split, as Dave fought back from the early 1-down deficit, to square the match at the 3rd hole. A 5-hole run by Andy guaranteed the win, while a split at the last hole held the win to 5-up.
Tom and Brian were next up, scoring 6 ˝ - 2 ˝ wins over Dan Richardson and Sue.
Tom started the round with 3 straight wins to quickly go 3-up. Dan fought back taking 2 ˝ of the next 3 holes to get to just 1-down through 6, but then Tommy turned on the afterburners, winning the last 3 holes to close out the match! Nice round Tom!
Sue fought hard for every point she got against Brian, as all 2 ˝ points of her score came in ˝ point increments over 5 holes. It’s a tough row to hoe when your opponent shoots their handicap, and you are just a little off your game. Way to hang in there Sue!
Pete also got 2 ˝ of his points against Bob from 5 tied holes. A full point at the 16th helped to hold Bob to the 2-up, 5 ˝ - 3 ˝ point win.
The second group out was somewhat of a battle of the sexes, ending in a split decision, as Dan Palmerino and Dan Fusco went up against Gloria and Bette.
It was quite the back-and-forth affair, in the 1-stroke match for Gloria and Dan P, with the matched squared up at 5 of the 9 holes, including coming to the last hole. It was Gloria prevailing there with a bogey to win the match 5-4 and take the bonus point by 1 stroke. What a close match!
This one was close as well, with Bette taking the lead to 2-up after 4 holes. Dan squared the match up at 6, only to go 1-down again at the 7th. Par at the CTP hole got it back to all square heading into the final hole. A win there gave Dan his only lead of the night, along with the win. Nice comeback Dan!
Last, but not least, our featured heads-up match of Marty and Mark was another see-saw contest, with neither player having more than a 1-up lead. After splitting the first hole, Mark took the lead with a chip-in birdie at the 2nd hole. The match was squared up at 2 more times, with Marty taking a 1-up lead into the final hole. Mark needed to win that hole, and did, to tie the match at 4 ˝ - 4 ˝, with the bonus point going to Mark with a net score just 2-strokes better than Marty’s. As expected, it was close as close one😊
As we passed the half-way mark, we had a little bit of movement at the top, with Dan Fusco moving up from 2nd place into a tie for 1st with Mark. Tom and Andy broke out of their tie for 7th place, moving up into 3rd and 4th places respectively. Meanwhile, Marty fell from 3rd to 5th, while Dave and Tim dropped from their previous tie for 4th into a tie for 7th. Two more rounds, and then some folks can start dropping their low points, and things should start to tighten up around the top.
Dan Fusco continues his stranglehold at the top, 3000 points ahead of Andy, who moved ahead of Tim into 2nd place. Mark remains steady in 4th place, followed by Jim making a big move up the pack from 10th into 5th, nudging Bette down one spot into 6th. There are just three rounds left in the regular season, and then it will be on to the play-offs!
42 – Andy
43 – Mark, Jim
45 – Marty, Dan Fusco
34 – Jim
36 – Andy, Tom, Brian
37 – Mark
Well, unfortunately Sue’s knockout reign was short-lived, as she went from being last week’s winner, to first out this week. It was Andy’s turn this week, as he, Bob and Dan F went to one extra hole to decide this week’s winner. Dan still leads the season-long competition, followed by Marty and then Jim.
Mark got the only birdie of the night, and his first of the season, with a chip-in at the 2nd hole.
Recording his first CTP of the season with a nice 13’ 5” shot into the 17th hole was Dan Fusco. Great shot Dan!
